The construction of the shrine is based on the schedules of ongoing construction projects on the Christ Cathedral campus. The Christ Cathedral is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 17, 2019. The construction of the Shrine is estimated to begin in 2019 as soon as the bid has been selected. Construction documents have now been submitted to the City of Garden Grove for plan-checking and permit to build. In about 4 weeks, the City of Garden Grove will provide feedback on the design so that the architect can adjust and obtain a building permit. Meanwhile, the architect continues to complete the construction documents for use in bidding.
There was a cost estimate completed over a year ago by a general contractor having a renovation contract for Christ Cathedral. The Shrine preliminary design report was used as the basis for this estimate. The construction cost for the Shrine could cost up to $10 million. To ensure there are enough funds to cover expenses, a 10% contingency has been added towards the fundraising of Phase 1, totaling $11 million dollars. However, according to the experience of the construction industry, the estimated price without detailed drawings is often higher than the estimated cost when the design is complete with complete details for all disciplines. Therefore, the total construction cost of the Shrine is likely to be less than $10 million.
Meanwhile, architects are working with the La Vang Committee to select materials, construction methods to reduce the cost of the whole project.
As of December 2018, the amount pledged is $11.2 million and the payments submitted to the Orange Catholic Foundation is $8.5 million.
